Keyword search box

You can choose the field you wish to search:

  • All fields:
  •   ...searches all fields at once, including item descriptions
  • Subject:
  •   ...searches words only in the subject field
  • Title:
  •   ...searches words only in the title field
  • Place:
  •   ...searches words only in the place field
  • Author/Creator:
  •   ...searches words only in the author/creator field
  • Advanced:
  •   ...add qualifications to your search (restrict by format, date, etc.)

    In the search box you can use the boolean operators and and or. For example:

    women and arts

    - This search would find all entries that contain the words "women" and "arts".

    women and (arts or sports)

    - This search would find all entries that contain the word "women" and either one of the two words "arts" or "sports".

    If you wish to search words as a phrase, you can enclose them in quotes, for example:

    "Grand Army of the Republic"

    Truncation enables you to search different endings of a word. For example:

    build*

    - This search would find all entries that contain the word "build," "builds," "builder," "building," and "buildings."

    If you are not sure of the spelling of a word you can use fuzzy searching to help you out. For example:

    ?trilobyte

    - This search would find all entries that contain the word "trilobite," the correct spelling of Ohio's state fossil.

    A quick way to explore material related to a particular topic is to use the about function. For example:

    about(wright brothers)

    - This search would find entries that directly relate to the Wright brothers, but would also retrieve items about Dayton, flight, and so on.

    If you have a specific call number you need to search you can use the call number (cn:) prefix. For example:

    cn:Series 1016

    Sort by:

    This option lets you sort the results of your search according to the criterion you select.
