Americans not fighting overseas during World War II were asked by the government to do their part. American citizens were aksed to make sacrifices and aid in the war effort. Some foods were rationed and Americans were asked to grow gardens to help with the food shortages. These gardens became known as Victory Gardens. Americans were also asked to collect and save scrap materials that could be used by the military. Some people orgaizned collection drives. Many Americans felt great pride aiding in the war effort.
