Johnson's Island Autograph Book

This autograph book of Confederate prisoners held on Johnson's Island in Lake Erie belonged to Mollie M. Conway of Dubuque, Iowa. Miss Conway sent packages of food and supplies to the soldiers, some of whom were friends of her brother James who had been killed while fighting for the Confederacy. In gratitude, the soldiers sent Ms. Conway the autograph album containing more than 150 signatures and additional information on rank, organization and the hometown of the soldiers who signed. The 6" x 7.5" (15.24 x 19.05 cm) autograph book is 85 pages, although the autographs only fill approximately 40 pages. It is part of a collection of books on Johnson's Island, some of which were part of a transfer from the Rare Books Department of the Bowling Green State University Library to the Center for Archival Collections during the summer of 1977.
