Athens Floods Brochure

The brochure, "Floods in Athens, Ohio: Is the Hocking Tamed?," was published in 1972. It contains photographs of the 1907 flood as well as an aerial photograph with outlines of the limits of an intermediate regional flood (a major flood that is expected to occur every 100 years). It consists of two pages and measures 4" x 9" (10.16 x 22.86 cm).

Following World War II, the Ohio University campus began to spread into the flood plain of the Hocking River, which runs from north of Lancaster to the Ohio River at Hockingport. The Hocking Conservancy District was established in 1963 to attempt to reduce the frequency and severity of flooding in the Hocking River floodplain. One solution was to re-channel the river through the Athens area.
